Cups now Real's best hope concedes Casillas

MADRID, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillassays his side's best chance of silverware this season lies outside the Primera Liga after their goalless draw with Villarreal saw them fall 13 points adrift of leaders Barcelona.

'Day by day it is becoming clearer that it will be easier to win the King's Cup or the Champions League because these are knockout tournaments,' Casillas told radio station COPE on Monday.

'At this level in the league you cannot afford to drop points. The leaders now have a 13 point advantage over us and the teams between are also getting results.'

Barcelona beat city rivals Espanyol 2-1 away on Saturday to make it 15 consecutive wins in all competitions, while the chasing clubs all dropped points.

Since replacing the sacked Vanderlei Luxemburgo last month Real coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro has managed only one win in four league outings and the club are sixth in the standings.

They face Arsenal in the Champions League next month and hold a 1-0 first leg lead over struggling Athletic Bilbao in the last 16 of the King's Cup. The second leg takes place in the Bernabeu on Thursday.
