Semipro Burton holds Man United to tie

LONDON -- Burton Albion, a semipro team that includes a trainer and a sports shop assistant, played mighty Manchester United to a 0-0 tie Sunday in the FA Cup.

Burton is ranked 105 places Man United in English soccer's pyramid of leagues. But it prevented the likes of Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo from scoring at 6,000-seat capacity Pirelli Stadium. Now it will go to the Reds' 67,000 Old Trafford in a replay.

United manager Alex Ferguson rested many of his stars and started virtually a backup team, including U.S. goakeeper Tim Howard. But Rooney and Ronaldo went on as substitutes with 30 minutes only to encounter a sharp goalkeeper in Burton's Saul Deeney.

He twice made saves on Rooney and also blocked a shot from Ritchie Jones during injury time to make sure Burton gained a place in Monday's fourth-round draw.

"It was a staggering performance," manager Nigel Clough said. "Facing Manchester United in a replay, it's absolutely superb for everyone."

Last season, United was also held 0-0 by semipro Exeter City but won the replay and went on to reach the final, where it was beaten on penalty kicks by Arsenal.

Serie A
ROME -- Inter Milan's six-game winning streak ended with a 0-0 tie with Siena, leaving the team 10 points behind Serie A leader Juventus.

Siena goalkeeper Antonio Mirante made a standout save with his foot to stop a shot from Dejan Stankovic in the second half.

Juventus has 49 points after it beat Palermo 2-1 on Saturday on two goals by Adrian Mutu. Inter stayed in second place, followed by AC Milan and Fiorentina with 37 points each.

Primera Liga
MADRID -- Osasuna's nine-game winning streak at home ended with a 1-1 tie with Racing Santander. The second-place team is four points behind Barcelona.

Ludovic Delporte gave Osasuna the lead with a curling free kick only for Antonito Ramiro to tie the score for the visitors just before halftime.

Barcelona beat crosstown rival Espanyol 2-1 on Saturday for its 11th straight league win and a club-record 15th in all competitions.
