Everton's Wayne Rooney close to accepting D.C. United move - sources

Everton striker Wayne Rooney is close to accepting a move to D.C. United, sources have told ESPN FC.

The 32-year-old has been considering his future for more than a month after his representatives agreed to a deal in principle with the MLS side.

Rooney, Manchester United and England's record goal scorer, has been in the United States since the end of the Premier League season on what was described as a "fact-finding mission."

And after more talks with D.C. United, who currently sit bottom of the Eastern Conference, sources have told ESPN FC that Rooney is on the verge of agreeing to the move.

Rooney still has one year left on his contract at Everton after returning to Goodison Park from United in 2017.

He scored 11 goals in 40 games last season, but sources have told ESPN FC that Everton, who have installed Marco Silva as their new manager, will not stand in his way if he decides to leave.

The move would follow that of fellow former Manchester United man Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who joined LA Galaxy in March after spending more than a season at Old Trafford.

Ibrahimovic, 36, has been an immediate hit in the league, scoring seven goals in 11 matches with Los Angeles while recently being voted to the MLS All-Star team by the fans.
