Romario signs for Vasco for another year

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan 4 (Reuters) - Former Brazil forward Romario, who will be 40 this month, has agreed to stay at Vasco da Gama for another year, the club said on Wednesday.

Romario, who finished as top scorer in last year's Brazilian championship with 22 goals, had been the subject of speculation over a possible move to Brazilian champions Corinthians.

But Vasco officials said they had been confident all along that he would stay in Rio rather than move to Sao Paulo.

'All we did was make it official,' Vasco's football vice-president Jose Luiz Moreira told reporters.

'Romario had a number of chances to play for teams in Sao Paulo when he was beginning his career, but he didn't want to. So there's no way he was going to leave Rio at this stage.'

The striker left the meeting without commenting.

Romario rejoined Vasco, the club where he began his career, at the start of last year following an unhappy spell at Fluminense, where many felt he had kept playing for too long.

After a shaky start, he re-discovered his scoring touch and was free of the injuries which had nagged him in the previous few years.
