Gannon takes over at Stockoport after Turner exit

Stockport have appointed former player Jim Gannon as their caretaker manager after the departure of Chris Turner.

The 47-year-old, who played for the Hatters for 10 years between 1990 and 2000, takes charge for the crucial League Two match against fellow strugglers Torquay.

The Edgeley Park club, who were relegated last season, are bottom of the table and following the 6-0 defeat by Macclesfield, both the board and Turner decided enough was enough.

The 47-year-old was in charge of County for just over a year and after overhauling the squad and drastically reducing the wage bill, performances failed to improve on the pitch.

Turner, who has already been offered some coaching work by a Premiership club, said: 'It was a difficult job.

'They were in a difficult situation last season and to be fair that hasn't improved really.

'I've given everything to the job and there just comes a time in life when you just have to hold your hands up. I've given it my best but I haven't got a magic wand.

'The Macclesfield game was the accumulation of the last five or six weeks.

'The players have lost their confidence and it's best for all parties for this to happen mutually.

'Hopefully someone will come in and have a bit of luck because we haven't had any this season.'

The former Sheffield Wednesday and Hartlepool manager's assistant Colin West has also left the club.

County have won just twice in the league this season and are five points adrift of third-bottom Rushden.
