Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio signs with Wolverhampton Wanderers

Newly promoted Wolves announced the signing of Portugal goalkeeper on Twitter.

Premier League newcomers Wolverhampton Wanderers signed Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio on a free transfer from Sporting Lisbon.

Patricio, who helped his country win the European Championship two years ago, agreed a four-year deal with Wolves, who said on Monday the deal is subject to international clearance.

Those approvals may not be straightforward as Patricio, who had spent his entire career with Sporting, was one of a number of players who annulled his contract with the Portuguese club earlier this month.

He had accused club president Bruno de Carvalho of turning fans against the team after players and staff were attacked at a training session in May. The president had also suspended 19 of the club's players after their Europa League defeat to Atletico Madrid.

Patricio is represented by super-agent Jorge Mendes, who also has a long-standing relationship with Wolves. Mendes also represents Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo, midfielder Ruben Neves, attacker Diogo Jota and winger Ivan Cavaleiro.

The 30-year-old featured in Portugal's 3-3 draw with Spain last Friday at the World Cup and has earned 70 caps for his country.

The signing follows Wolves' permanent capture of defender Willy Boly, while Mexican forward Raul Jimenez has joined the club on a season-long loan from Benfica.
