Rosenborg's Skjelbred faces surgery

TRONDHEIM, Norway, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Rosenborg midfielder Per Ciljan Skjelbred will undergo surgery on Thursday after he broke his leg in a tackle by Ieroklis Stoltidis in a 1-1 home Champions League draw with Olympiakos.

Doctors said Skjelbred, 18, was likely to be out until March after he was carried off after six minutes on Wednesday. Midfielder Stoltidis collected a yellow card for the sliding tackle. Rosenborg said he should have been sent off.

'It was a direct attack...very ugly,' Rosenborg sports director Rune Bratseth said. Both bones in Skjelbred's lower leg snapped just above the ankle.

Stoltidis said he had not meant to harm Skjelbred.

'I tried to get the ball but unfortunately I hit the player,' he said. 'It was never my intention to hurt him.'

The draw earned Rosenborg a place in the UEFA Cup.
