United's Gomez apologizes for spitting at opponent

WASHINGTON -- D.C. United midfielder Christian Gomez apologized Tuesday for spitting at Chicago Fire's C.J. Brown during a playoff game.

Gomez was ejected in the 55th minute of Chicago's 4-0 road victory Sunday, which eliminated defending champion D.C. United from the MLS playoffs.

"I want to apologize to my teammates, the fans, the club and Major League Soccer for my actions. What I did was wrong, and I am deeply sorry for what happened. It was a frustrating night and I let the emotions get the best of me," Gomez said in a statement released by D.C. United.

"People who know me know that those are not characteristics of who I am as a person. I want to thank the fans in particular for the wonderful support that they've have shown me and my family," he said.

Gomez was an MLS all-star and was honored as D.C. United's team MVP after producing 11 goals and nine assists in his first full season with the club.
