Fire beat Rochester on penalty kicks
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Chris Armas assisted on Chicago's goal in regulation and scored the game-winning penalty kick, leading the Fire past the Rochester Raging Rhinos 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 tie in a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal match on Wednesday night.
Armas sent a free kick to Samuel Caballero, whose header bounced off both posts before beating Rochester goalie Scott Vallow in the 34th minute.
The Rhinos tied it in the 60th minute when Doug Miller got behind the Fire defense and beat keeper Zach Thornton.
The score remained tied through the rest of regulation and two 15-minute overtimes, setting up the penalty kicks.
Each team scored twice before Rochester's Jonathan Bolanos hit the left post and Chicago, the three-time U.S. Open Cup champion, went on to win.
Thornton made four saves and also added a goal during the penalty kicks for the Fire.
Chicago will face FC Dallas in the semifinals on Sept. 14.
