Borussia Monchengladbach want Reece Oxford back from West Ham

West Ham United's Reese Oxford was recalled from a loan to Borussia Monchengladbach in December.

Borussia Monchengladbach have not given up on keeping West Ham United defender Reece Oxford, who was recalled early from his loan stint with the Bundesliga side in December.

Despite only making three Bundesliga appearances, the Foals hoped to keep Oxford, 19, at the Borussia Park at least until the end of the season.

Although he joined Gladbach on a one-year loan in the summer, West Ham opted to recall the England youth international early amid reported interest from RB Leipzig.

Gladbach, however, think they might be able to retain Oxford for the second half of the season.

"We are trying to get the player back in January," Max Eberl, the club's sporting director, told Express. "We'll see whether it'd be a loan or a permanent transfer. It's a 50-50 chance [it will happen]."

Reports in England have said that West Ham are holding out for a transfer fee of around €15 million to allow Oxford a permanent move away from the London Stadium, but Eberl added that the Germans will not pay such a fee.

"You can get this on the English transfer market. But I can't, and I don't want to join in. We just can't compete with it. We need to find a responsible path," Eberl said.

Oxford, meanwhile, returned to West Ham team training on Friday following a minor ankle injury and could become an option for the FA Cup third-round replay against Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday.

Hammers manager David Moyes told reporters on Friday that Oxford could indeed leave West Ham in January, but only on loan.

"I don't think you should sell your best young players," he said. "Could he leave on loan again? Possibly, but that will be determined by business done throughout the window, really."
