Porto boss Sergio Conceicao suggests Iker Casillas is staying put

Iker Casillas is contracted to Porto until next summer.

Porto coach Sergio Conceicao has given a strong indication that goalkeeper Iker Casillas will remain at the club in January.

Reports in Spain said Casillas could leave the Portuguese giants during the winter transfer window and return to La Liga with Porto eager to sell him to avoid breaching financial fair play rules.

The former Real Madrid captain has not featured for his club in the Primeira Liga since Oct. 1, with Jose Sa preferred in goal, but the 36-year-old did start in Thursday's 3-0 win over Rio Ave in the Taca da Liga.

Asked about Casillas' future, Conceicao said in his postgame news conference: "He had a good game today, just as the rest of the team did. He was very calm and he is a goalkeeper with a lot of experience. He is part of the squad and I fully trust him.

"All the players are committed to this project and we are alive in all competitions playing at a very positive level and we want to continue to do so. We have a very competitive group, a strong one, a group that is the image of what FC Porto is as a club."

Tied to Porto until next summer, Casillas has wages of €5 million gross per season.

Madrid reportedly paid up to 50 percent of his wages after he left in 2015, but that ceased in the summer, leaving Porto to come up with the full amount.

Casillas tweeted after Thursday's game: "Penultimate game of the year and with another victory!!! In this case, in the Copa de la Liga!!! A few days of holidays and we are back on the 30th ready to consolidate the first place in the group!!"

Casillas kept 23 clean sheets while giving away 23 goals in 43 games for Porto last season when they finished runners-up to Benfica in the Primeira Liga.

Former Spain captain Casillas was awarded the 2017 Golden Foot award in Monaco last month for his career achievements.
