Barcelona's Luis Suarez to miss Uruguay friendlies to aid knee recovery

Barcelona striker Luis Suarez will miss Uruguay's friendlies against Poland and Austria in November in an attempt to fully recover from a knee problem which he's been suffering from since August.

Suarez was ruled out for a month after injuring his knee in the Spanish Super Cup defeat to Real Madrid but returned within two weeks to play for Uruguay in World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Paraguay.

Since then, he's played eight games for Barca and two more for Uruguay, helping them qualify for the World Cup earlier this month.

However, there have been conflicting reports about the state of his knee, with Barca knocking back claims that he will need to have an operation on the injury.

Barca coach Ernesto Valverde said on Friday that he didn't think it was "too much of a problem" but Uruguay have confirmed that the Catalan club have requested Suarez sit out their two friendly matches in November.

"Barcelona's medical department has proposed that Luis Suarez undertake treatment for a week from Nov. 5 in order to continue the rehabilitation of his right knee," the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) said in a statement.

"For this reason, the player will not participate in the friendly games planned for Nov. 10 and Nov. 14 against Poland and Austria."

Luis Suarez has been struggling with a knee injury throughout this season.

Suarez remains available for Barcelona and is in the squad for Saturday's La Liga match against Malaga.

The forward is then likely to be rested for the midweek Copa del Rey tie against Murcia, but is expected to feature against Athletic Bilbao, Olympiakos and Sevilla before taking a break during the next international break to focus on his rehabilitation.

Suarez's form throughout the time he's been carrying a knee problem has come in for criticism, with the former Liverpool player scoring just three goals in 10 appearances so far this season.
