Villa sign £1.35m Djemba-Djemba
LONDON, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Aston Villa have signed Cameroon midfielder Eric Djemba-Djemba from fellow Premier League club Manchester United for £1.35 million ($2.54 million).
The 23-year-old had a medical on Monday before signing a 4-1/2-year contract, the club said on its website. Further payments up to £500,000 will be based on appearances.
Djemba-Djemba joined United from French club Nantes for £3.5 million ($6.59 million) in July 2003 but has struggled to break into the first team.
He made only 20 league appearances for United, seven as a substitute, and was well down the central midfield pecking order at Old Trafford.
The arrival of Djemba-Djemba will be a boost for manager David O'Leary, who has had to cope with a spate of injuries as Villa have slipped to 11th in the 20-team standings.
Djemba-Djemba, part of Cameroon's squad at the 2002 World Cup, could make his debut in Wednesday's league match at Fulham.
