Houston Dynamo add ex-Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos

Philippe Senderos has joined the Houston Dynamo.

The Houston Dynamo signed former Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos on Monday, following a successful trial.

The 32-year-old has played at the past three World Cups with Switzerland and moves to MLS after playing his entire career in Europe.

The Dynamo did not reveal terms of his contract. He fills their last international roster spot, which became available when Erick Torres received his green card a day earlier.

He completed a trial with the Dynamo last month and trained with the club before the July 29 against the Portland Timbers, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The Dynamo are currently in second place in the Western Conference, three points behind leaders Sporting Kansas City, and general manager Matt Jordan said he will bolster the squad ahead of the MLS playoffs.

"Philippe Senderos will be a welcomed addition to our team," Jordan said. "His extensive experience, leadership qualities, and ability to organize and communicate will complement our already talented group of defenders as we enter the final third of the season.

"With this signing, along with the quality of our current group, we are confident that we have a very deep roster with players at every position who have the ability to step in at any moment to contribute the success of our team."

Senderos signed for Arsenal in 2003 and spent five seasons with the Gunners until going out on loan to AC Milan, followed by a brief spell at Everton.

He completed a permanent move to Fulham in 2010 and played in London for four seasons. He has since played for Valencia, Aston Villa, Grasshoppers and Rangers and arrives as a free agent.
