Hamburg sign Kyriakos Papadopoulos from Bayer Leverkusen

Kyriakos Papadopoulos spent the second half of last season on loan at Hamburg.

Hamburg have signed defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos on a permanent transfer from Bayer Leverkusen. The 25-year-old joins on a three-year contract.

Greek defender Papadopoulos already spent the second half of the Bundesliga season on loan at Hamburg after failing to secure playing time during a spell at RB Leipzig.

He featured in 15 league games and scored two goals for Hamburg as the club once again secured another year of top-flight football late in the season.

"He gave the team a push during the second half of the season, and his winning mentality and passion can also carry the other players," Hamburg sporting director Jens Todt said on the club's official website

He added: "Despite his 25 years, Papa takes on responsibility and leads the way."

Papadopoulos has appeared in 107 league games for Schalke 04, Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig and Hamburger SV. He has won 25 caps for Greece.

According to reports in German media, Hamburg have paid €6.5 million for the defender, a sum that could rise up towards €10m including add-ons.
