Man United cool Antoine Griezmann interest, looking at strikers - sources

Manchester United have cooled their interest in Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann, sources have told ESPN FC.

United have been heavily linked with a move for Griezmann, 26, with sources telling ESPN FC in February that the France international was a primary transfer target for the club this summer.

Griezmann himself rated his own chances of moving to Old Trafford as "six out of 10" last month, but sources close to United have now confirmed that signing the Atletico man, or any other No. 10, is no longer a priority.

Griezmann later on Thursday took to Twitter to post a message to Atletico fans, seemingly cementing his stay at the Vicente Calderon.

Uncertainty surrounding the future of Zlatan Ibrahimovic has seen the club turn their attention to bringing in a new striker instead.

Ibrahimovic missed the last month of the season after suffering a knee ligament injury against Anderlecht in their Europa League quarterfinal. The former Sweden international underwent surgery in the United States and has started his rehabilitation.

Ibrahimovic's contract is set to expire next month, and he has been linked a move to LA Galaxy and a return to AC Milan.

But even if he stays at Old Trafford, he is not expected to return to action until the New Year.

Antoine Griezmann has been linked with a summer move to Manchester United.

There is also no guarantee he will be able to rediscover the form that saw him score 28 goals in 46 games this season.

Jose Mourinho was critical of his team's wastefulness in front of goal last season as they registered just 54 Premier League goals.

Mourinho has been linked with signing Everton's Romelu Lukaku, Kylian Mbappe of Monaco, Torino's Andrea Belotti and Alvaro Morata of Real Madrid as he looks to solve the problem and compensate for Ibrahimovic's absence for at least the first five months of next season.

On Thursday it was announced that Atletico's transfer ban, imposed due to irregularities with the signing of underage players, will stand.

The Spanish side will not be able to register new players this summer. They will, however, still be allowed to sell players, including Griezmann.

Griezmann has a €100 million buyout clause in his contract that United are aware of, but they have now taken a step away from a potential deal as they look to solve their striker shortage first.
