Florian Jungwirth MLS move still up to Darmstadt coach Torsten Frings

Darmstadt will not allow holding midfielder Florian Jungwirth a move to MLS should the club not be able to get a "like-for-like alternative," coach Torsten Frings has said.

The San Jose Earthquakes are the team who have expressed an interest in bringing the 27-year-old to MLS, a source told ESPN FC on Friday.

Jungwirth is under contract at Darmstadt, the club he joined from Bochum in 2014, until the end of the ongoing season.

However, with an MLS slot opening up for him during the U.S. league's primary transfer window, he hopes he will be allowed to leave the Bundesliga bottom club before his contract expires.

"It's my wish to continue my career in the United States," Jungwirth told kicker earlier this week. "And I clearly communicated it when I extended my deal here. I hope that the transfer now happens at short notice."

The German football magazine added that an MLS club have made an offer for the holding midfielder, who has appeared in 35 Bundesliga matches for Darmstadt.

Yet, with the German transfer window closing next Tuesday, time is running out for Jungwirth, who won't be allowed to leave the club should they not get a replacement.

"I also have many dreams which don't turn into reality," Frings told kicker on Thursday. "We need to find a like-for-like alternative. As long as that's not the case, he can't leave."

Information from ESPN FC's Jeff Carlisle was used in this report.
