Marco van Ginkel signs new Chelsea deal, rejoining PSV Eindhoven on loan

Marco van Ginkel has signed a new contract at Chelsea until June 2019 and will rejoin PSV Eindhoven on loan in January, the Premier League leaders have confirmed.

Van Ginkel, 24, scored eight goals in 13 Eredivisie appearances on loan at PSV in the second half of last season, helping the club to their second league title in as many years, and was set to return for another spell in the summer before a lingering knee injury scuppered the move.

But recent months have seen the midfielder step up his rehabilitation at Cobham with several appearances for Chelsea's development squad, and the Dutchman is now deemed ready to return to senior competitive action.

Van Ginkel told PSV's website: "I'm glad I chose this route. Rest and physiotherapy were necessary. I am now back to top-level football and am glad PSV have given me that opportunity. I came here last season had a lovely time and hope that we can match it."

PSV sporting director Marcel Brands said: "Marco is a player who adds something extra to our selection. That's the premise of the choice we've made. I've kept in touch with him in recent months, because we have a potential gain in him. We have a good player."

PSV coach Phillip Cocu also welcomed the deal, saying: "Marco is a box-to-box midfielder with a strong character, depth and scoring ability. Last season he showed his quality. I am very satisfied with Marco as a reinforcement for the squad."

Chelsea now have 39 players on loan and his return to the Eredivisie will see Van Ginkel compete against fellow Blues youngsters Matt Miazga, Lewis Baker and Nathan, who are all spending the season at Vitesse Arnhem.

Van Ginkel was signed by Jose Mourinho to play a first-team role in July 2013, but his career has stalled since he suffered a serious knee injury in a League Cup tie against Swindon Town only two months after his arrival. He has also spent time on loan from Chelsea at AC Milan and Stoke City as well as PSV.
