Bayern Munich 'don't need new players' despite injury crisis - Ancelotti

Bayern Munich coach Carlo Ancelotti insists the club will not be making any more signings this summer despite beginning the season with eight first-team players out injured.

Bundesliga champions Bayern travel to fourth-division side CZ Jena in the first cup match of the season on Friday, and the holders were hit with the news on Thursday that winger Kingsley Coman has suffered an ankle injury. The club were already without defenders Jerome Boateng and Holger Badstuber, the midfield trio of Xabi Alonso, Thiago Alcantara and Renato Sanches and attacking players Arjen Robben and Douglas Costa.

Bayern begin their league title defence next Friday against Werder Bremen, but Ancelotti is confident that his squad is big enough to repeat last season's domestic double and mount a bid for the Champions League.

"I am happy with this squad," the 57-year-old told a news conference. "We don't need new players."

Kingsley Coman is the latest Bayern Munich star to suffer an injury ahead of the new Bundesliga season.

Bundesliga champions Bayern brought Germany defender Mats Hummels and Portugal midfielder Renato Sanches this summer, while offloading midfielders Mario Gotze and Sebastian Rode to Borussia Dortmund and defender Medhi Benatia to Juventus.

They will go into the new season with a core of 22 outfield players, including United States international Julian Green, 21, and 18-year-olds Fabian Benko and Niklas Dorsch brought up from the youth ranks.

Several of their experienced players such as Badstuber, Javi Martinez, Thiago, Ribery and Robben have had long spells on the sidelines in recent seasons, while Boateng has sustained two major muscular injuries in 2016.

Stars such as Ribery, 33, Robben, 32, Xabi Alonso, 34, and Philipp Lahm, 32, are each nearing the end of their career and they do not have a top-level alternative in attack for star striker Robert Lewandowski.

Carlo Ancelotti is hoping to add a German league title to championships won in Italy, England and France.

Ancelotti added that he believes most of the injured players will return to the squad following the upcoming international break in early September.

"Coman has an ankle injury, but it's not a major injury. We hope that he returns after the international break. And Robben, Douglas Costa and Renato Sanches could already play against Bremen [next week], but we want to use the international break and take no risks," Ancelotti said.

Ancelotti also said that he talked to Ribery, who narrowly escaped a red card after catching Dortmund's Felix Passlack with a flailing arm during last weekend's German Super Cup, which Bayern won 2-0 at the Westfalenstadion.

"I believe that he understood it," he said. "Such actions are dangerous, and you should cut them out."
