Ex-Newcastle defender Steven Taylor set to join Portland Timbers - sources
The Portland Timbers are set to secure the signing of former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor, sources close to the player have told ESPN FC.
Taylor is a free agent after ending his 21-year association with Newcastle earlier this summer when his contract expired.
The 30-year-old had been linked with a move to Turkish side Fenebahce, but the Timbers have moved quickly to bring him to America.
Taylor has held talks and undergone a medical with the reigning MLS Cup champions and he is expected to seal his move to Portland by the end of the week.
The move will see Taylor link up with former Aston Villa and Birmingham City defender Liam Ridgewell with the Timbers.
Former England under-21 international Taylor made 268 appearances, and scored 15 goals during his time at Newcastle, where he at times struggled to stay injury-free.
Also on Thursday, the Timbers announced the signing of MLS veteran Chris Konopka, filling out the squad after Adam Kwarasey left the team to return to Norway.
Konopka, 31, is an MLS veteran but most recently played for Ross County FC in the Scottish Premiership. He will back up Jake Gleeson in the Timbers' net.
