Mathieu Debuchy wanted Manchester United loan move from Arsenal

The ESPN FC crew discuss Manchester United's continued poor performance in the Premier League after their loss to Sunderland.

Mathieu Debuchy says he is "annoyed" with Arsene Wenger over what he feels was a broken promise about playing time at Arsenal, and confirmed that the Gunners boss blocked a potential loan move to Manchester United in January.

Debuchy became second-choice right-back behind Hector Bellerin at Arsenal over the last two seasons and left on loan to Bordeaux on Feb. 1 to try to secure a spot in France's squad for the European Championship.

In an interview with French Canal Plus, Debuchy said he hopes Arsenal go on to win the Premier League without him but acknowledged that he was disappointed with the way he had been treated by Wenger.

"Yes, I'm a little bit annoyed by him," Debuchy said. "It's his choice [not to give him playing time]. I came back well this summer, I had a good preseason.

"I was able to talk to him to know my future at Arsenal. He said that I would have game time and that we would discuss it in December. Unfortunately, I didn't have this game time."

Debuchy's loan deal to Bordeaux only went through on deadline day after a drawn-out process that had seen him linked to Premier League struggler Aston Villa, and the Frenchman said he was also disappointed that Wenger refused to let him join Manchester United, who made a late attempt to take him on loan.

"Yes, at the end of the transfer window they came in," Debuchy said. "They contacted my agents. I was disappointed, obviously. If I had the chance to go to Manchester United it would have been magnificent.

"Unfortunately it wasn't the case. I discussed it with the coach too, who said that obviously he couldn't help out a rival."

Debuchy joined Arsenal in 2014 from Newcastle but struggled with injuries in his first season, which gave Bellerin the chance to come in and stake his claim to the position.

"Yes, he's good," he said. "I can't deny it, that's sure, but I thought I could also fit in as a starter. But that's the way it is."
