Newcastle to improve Saido Berahino offer to £25m - sources

Newcastle are ready to make an improved bid of £25 million for West Bromwich Albion striker Saido Berahino, sources have told ESPN FC.

Berahino, 22, almost left West Brom for Tottenham in the summer but ended up staying at The Hawthorns despite a bitter falling out with chairman Jeremy Peace.

The striker's future is still up in the air and West Brom rejected Newcastle's £21m bid on Sunday, while Stoke have also tabled an offer for the England under-21 international.

Berahino, who scored two goals in the FA Cup draw with Peterborough at the weekend, is still keen to move on but West Brom are reluctant to sell on deadline day, especially to a relegation rival in Newcastle, while any move would also leave them short of time to bring in a replacement.

The Baggies' assistant head coach Dave Kemp said of Berahino: "He's still here, he's been in this morning. He's got a bit of a knock but he's in the squad for tomorrow's game. I'm expecting him to be here. The chairman deals with that side.

"It was awkward today, he has a dead leg he picked up on Saturday and came out a bit sore, he's gone home. With the media around that's probably the best thing to do. He's here, he's in the squad tomorrow."

Newcastle have already signed Andros Townsend, Henri Saivet and Jonjo Shelvey this month as they bid to escape relegation, despite sitting in 18th place in the table.

They also completed a loan move for Roma striker Seydou Doumbia earlier on Monday.
