Stephan El Shaarawy joins Roma on loan from AC Milan

Stephan El Shaarawy is hoping to kickstart his career with Roma.

Roma have confirmed the loan signing of Stephan El Shaarawy from AC Milan.

El Shaarawy, 23, spent the first half of the season on loan at Monaco but will spend the second half of the campaign at Roma as a replacement for Gervinho, who appeared to seal his deal with Chinese club Hebei China Fortune earlier on Tuesday.

The Giallorossi, who have paid €1.4 million to take the Italy international on loan, will have the option to make the deal permanent for €13m in the summer.

El Shaarawy told Roma's official website: "I'm very determined and excited. Roma is a fresh start for me. I've come here with a lot of humility to try and turn my career around."

He added on Roma TV: "I've joined Roma to show what I can do -- to myself, the coach and the Italian game as a whole. I hope to repay the faith the club is showing in me and therefore I want to give 100 percent when I play to try and achieve great things here."

The forward said he was looking forward to playing under new Roma boss Luciano Spalletti.

"I had a chance to speak to sporting director Walter Sabatini and I thanked him for the faith he's shown in me and the opportunity he's afforded me along with the coach, Luciano Spalletti," he said.

"I spoke to Sabatini face to face and chatted to Spalletti on the phone and I feel they're really behind me. I'm pleased and I hope to repay the faith they've shown in me through my performances on the pitch, so we can achieve great things."

He hopes the return to Serie A will boost his chances of playing for Italy at this summer's European Championship.

"To be called up for the national team you need to be playing regularly at club level and to do that you need to work hard, be committed and show desire," he said. "My aim is to play well for Roma to achieve that."

Milan general manager Adriano Galliani had suggested the club could take El Shaarawy back for the second half of the season after Monaco decided he was no longer in their plans, but Luiz Adriano's failure to complete a move to China saw the Rossoneri change their plans

Gervinho, 28, had scored six goals for Roma this season but asked to be released after receiving a lucrative offer from China.

The ex-Arsenal man had been linked with a switch to Jiangsu Suning but instead joined newly promoted Hebei, who were only formed in 2010, in a deal reported to be worth around €18 million euros.

He was pictured holding up a Hebeir shirt on Tuesday.
