Everton had no bid for Tim Howard from Colorado Rapids - Martinez

Everton manager Roberto Martinez said the club have received no contact from Major League Soccer side Colorado Rapids about a reported move for Tim Howard.

Last week, sources told ESPN FC's Jeff Carlisle that the Rapids are attempting to acquire the U.S. goalkeeper after being rebuffed in their attempt to land midfielder Alejandro Bedoya.

Reports suggested an agreement had been reached for a summer transfer but after Everton's 2-1 home defeat by Swansea City on Sunday, the Blues manager insisted that there was no approach.

"No at the moment there is nothing," Martinez said in the Liverpool Echo when asked whether he had received any enquiries for the 36-year-old. "There is nothing to comment on."

The Rapids had also traded Clint Irwin to Toronto FC, seemingly opening the door for Howard, but Colorado's remaining keeper Zac MacMath said on Monday he thought the starting job was his.

"I believe that I'm the starting goalkeeper here and it's something I'm excited for," MacMath told reporters. "It's a lot easier for me to know that I'll be there, and hopefully my preparation through preseason up until the first game will be right and we can start off on the right note."

Howard cemented his status as an iconic figure in U.S. soccer after his epic performance in the 2014 World Cup when he made 15 saves in the round-of-16 tie against Belgium, which Jurgen Klinsmann's side eventually lost in extra time.

The veteran has also been a mainstay for the Toffees, making over 400 appearances in all competitions, but has struggled to maintain his best form this season.

Although the U.S international continues to have the faith of manager Roberto Martinez, fans have been vocal in their criticism, and are calling for Joel Robles to take the No.1 spot.

If Colorado is successful in a bid, it would mark a return to MLS for Howard, who played for the MetroStars -- the forerunner to the New York Red Bulls -- from 1998 to 2003. Howard then signed for Manchester United, where he spent for seasons but was never able to nail down his place as first choice.

He was loaned to Everton for the 2006-07 season, impressing enough to earn a permanent move to Goodison Park.
