Wolfsburg to sign Argentine D'Alessandro

BERLIN, July 12 (Reuters) - German first division club VfL Wolfsburg are poised to sign River Plate playmaker Andres D'Alessandro on a five-year contract.

German media speculated the transfer fee was around €9million (£6m), which would be a club record.

'This is a big step for VfL Wolfsburg,' commercial manager Peter Pander told the club's website.

Wolfsburg have a co-operation deal with the Argentine champions and the clubs are due to complete the deal in Buenos Aires on Monday, subject to a medical examination.

The 22-year-old Argentine, who like Javier Saviola and Pablo Aimar came through River's youth ranks, had also been linked to Spanish clubs Barcelona and Valencia, and Germany's Schalke.

He will join his compatriots Pablo Quatrocchi and Diego Klimowicz at Wolfsburg.

'He is the best player currently playing in Argentina,' Klimowicz said.
