Western Sydney sign second Spaniard for new A-League season
The Western Sydney Wanderers midfield for the coming A-League season will have a Barcelona flavour with a second Spaniard joining the 2014 Asian champions.
Dimas Delgado has penned a one-year deal with Tony Popovic's side, joining countryman Andreu, another midfielder, at the club.
Like Andeu, Delgado hails from the Catalan area where Barcelona is located and came through the ranks of the reigning La Liga champions.
Starting his career at lower league side Gramenet before signing for Barcelona, Dimas spent one season in La Liga with Numancia before spending the past five years in the Segunda with Numancia, Cartagena and most recently Recreativo Huelva. He's made more than 200 appearances in Spanish football.
Delgado arrives in Sydney on Friday ahead of next week's all A-League clash against Brisbane Roar in the FFA Cup Round of 32.
Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said the acquisition of Dimas showed that Western Sydney are committed to returning to their status as one of the A-League's dominant club.
In 2014, they made the Grand Final for the second consecutive year, but slumped to a disappointing ninth place finish in their most recent campaign.
"We have had a very big off-season in terms of our recruitment, we believe that these new additions will have us in a very strong position leading into the coming season," Tsatsimas told FFA.com.au.
"Dimas has played in a top league in Europe his whole career and we know the calibre of player he is and that he can add another dimension to our midfield."
Delgado said he was hoping to make an immediate impact at the Wanderers.
He said: "I am very happy with the opportunity and I look forward to getting started with the Wanderers. I will do my best to adapt to the city and the Club as quickly as possible."
The Wanderers have a pre-season friendly against Central Coast Mariners in Coffs Harbour on Friday.
