Jose Mourinho uncertain on Thorgan Hazard future at Chelsea

Jose Mourinho has said Thorgan Hazard "has enough potential to play for Chelsea one day" but indicated that his future is uncertain as his first-team opportunities would be restricted by his brother Eden.

Thorgan Hazard, 21, is currently on loan at Borussia Monchengladbach, and the German club confirmed last month that they were in talks with Chelsea over a permanent transfer.

The attacking midfielder told Het Laatste Nieuws in his native Belgium this week that, while there was no agreement in place and it was "possible" he could stay at Stamford Bridge, staying at Gladbach would "give me the stability that I am seeking more than anything else."

Mourinho has been to check on Hazard on several occasions, including during Hazard's time at Zulte Waregem last season, but while he has been impressed by his performances, he said Chelsea have a wealth of players in his position.

"He's one of the few players I travel to see play live and we like him very much, but there is here one player in front of him who is not bad, a guy called Hazard like him, but Eden," Mourinho told the media at a news conference on Friday.

"The best decision was for him to go to Borussia and also Bundesliga is a good championship for him to play in and we'll see what happens."

He said Thorgan and Eden Hazard "can play in the same squad and even be in same team, one in one side and the other in the other," but he added: "We have Eden, [Andre] Schurrle, Oscar and Willian. We have a lot so for him it is better for him to play there."

Chelsea have sent a number of top players out on loan in recent seasons, with two of the most high-profile -- Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku -- sold to help meet financial fair play regulations.

However, Thibaut Courtois has replaced Petr Cech as the club's first-choice goalkeeper after an impressive stint at Atletico Madrid, and Mourinho said it was possible Hazard could also play a part for the club.

"Is he coming back or staying at Borussia? Do we want to buy or sell? Do we want money to make financial operations? This is something we have to take step by step," he said. "He is one of those players we have on loan that has enough potential to play for Chelsea one day."
