Southampton closing in on loan move for Atletico Madrid's Toby Alderweireld

Klinsmann is uniquely suited to tapping the world for talent, including the likes of Julian Green.
Toby Alderweireld represented Belgium at the World Cup.

Southampton are "confident" of tying up a loan deal for Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld, sources have told ESPN FC.

Saints manager Ronald Koeman is keen to bolster his defensive options after a summer that has seen the departures of Dejan Lovren, Calum Chambers and Luke Shaw, with the experienced Alderweireld one of his top targets.

The 25-year-old can play in the centre of defence or at right-back, while he made an appearance in last season's Champions League final as well as representing Belgium at the World Cup.

However, he has not been a regular starter under Atletico coach Diego Simeone since moving to the Spanish capital last year and has been regularly linked with a summer exit.

Newcastle are also reportedly interested in Alderweireld, but Southampton appear to be favourites to sign him.
