Patrick van Aanholt joins Sunderland

Sunderland have signed defender Patrick van Aanholt from Chelsea on a four-year contract.

- Chelsea confirm Drogba signing

Van Aanholt, 23, joined Chelsea from PSV Eindhoven in 2007 but has spent the majority of his time with the club out on loan, playing for sides including Newcastle, Wigan and Vitesse Arnhem.

The Netherlands international, who had a year to run on his contract with the Blues, has now completed a move to the Stadium of Light.

A statement on Chelsea's official website read: "Patrick van Aanholt has today (Friday) joined Sunderland on a permanent transfer. We would like to thank Patrick for his service and wish him the best of luck for the future."
