Sources: Frank Lampard joins NYCFC

Former Chelsea star Frank Lampard has completed a move to new MLS franchise New York City FC, sources told ESPN FC.

NYCFC, which will begin playing in MLS in 2015, have announced they will reveal a "major player signing" on Thursday morning, with sources confirming Lampard's identity.

Lampard, 36, will join Spanish striker David Villa at NYC FC. Villa will go on loan to Melbourne City before the newest MLS franchise opens play in March, and Lampard could possibly join him as both the American and Australian clubs have business relationships with Manchester City.

Lampard spent 13 years at Chelsea, where he won the Premier League three times, the FA Cup four times, and the Champions League in 2012.

The midfielder is the club's all-time top scorer with 211 goals and has played 648 games at Stamford Bridge. However, Lampard's contract ran out this summer and he decided to continue his future elsewhere.

He has made 106 appearances for England, the last in England's final game of the World Cup against Costa Rica. He said earlier this month that he has not decided whether to retire from international football.

Lampard's unveiling is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at Pier 5 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, after which he will participate in a youth football clinic.
