Southampton offer Jay Rodriguez deal

New boss Ronald Koeman says Southampton do not have to sell any more players this summer.

Southampton have offered striker Jay Rodriguez a lucrative new contract and made it clear that they intend to hang on to their remaining star assets this summer, sources have told ESPN.

Having already sold Rickie Lambert and Adam Lallana to Liverpool and signed off on the 27-million-pound transfer of teenage full-back Luke Shaw to Manchester United, the south coast club are eager to ensure they do not lose any more of their key players.

They have confirmed that determination by offering Rodriguez a new contract, and they are also determined to hang on to Croatian defender Dejan Lovren, who is a transfer target for Liverpool.

Rodriguez has also been linked with a move to Liverpool in some newspapers, with former Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino reported to be interested in bringing him to Tottenham.

Meanwhile, Lovren has suggested he would like to follow Lambert and Lallana to Anfield, but Saints boss Ronald Koeman was informed that he would not be forced to sell any of his players this summer other than the three who have already departed, and he is determined to stick to that policy.

"The information I was given about the squad in my first meeting at the club was clear. I knew about Rickie Lambert, Lallana and Shaw, but after that we said we are not a selling club," said Koeman, who is currently on a preseason tour with his new squad in Belgium.

"We said then that we wanted to keep the rest of our players and replace those who are leaving. There is a lot of movement with players at the moment, but we do not need to sell anyone.

"I am the new manager and I like to keep all the good players. Dejan is a key man in a key position in the team and we have to do what is best for the club. The final decision has to be made by the board of the club."

Lovren has been training with Southampton in Belgium in recent days, while Rodriguez is expected to return to action in October as he recovers from the knee injury that ruled him out of England's World Cup squad.
