Dempsey drops newest rap single

USMNT forward Clint Dempsey contends that his side still has much room for improvement after a crucial victory over Ghana.

U.S. star Clint Dempsey's latest foray into rap music dropped on Wednesday, so he can add another feather in his cap as he rides the wave of his team's 2-1 win over Ghana in its 2014 World Cup opener.

It has taken the 31-year-old more than 30 seconds to gain recognition in the rap game. The 13-track album, entitled "The Redux," was done with his friend, rapper XO and fellow Nacogdoches,Texas, native, producer Mike Chehade. It is Dempsey's second attempt at rhyming, after his first, "Don't Tread," was released in 2006 with little critical acclaim.

"We were just having fun with it, and it ended up being an album," Dempsey told The Wall Street Journal.

Chehade told WSJ that the record could help make the U.S. team seem a little more intimidating.

"We're not known as a soccer powerhouse -- we're almost known for being soft. But Clint has this edge," he told the newspaper. "He'll just call you sometimes and start free-styling - he doesn't even say hello ... I'm not saying he's Eminem, but he's definitely qualified."

Dempsey, who uses his nickname "Deuce" as his handle, joins a long list of athletes to lay down tracks.

Ronaldinho recently starred in a rap project, called "Let's Drink" and featuring DJ Dennis, with the chorus: "Boot the glass up high, let's drink / We will enjoy life, we drink / I'm full of money, let's drink."

FIFA has officially timed Clint Dempsey's goal at 30 seconds in the United States' 2-1 win over Ghana, making Major League Soccer's highest paid player the fifth fastest scorer in World Cup history.

Dempsey is still deciding whether to wear a mask to protect his broken nose, though the U.S. Soccer Federation said he should be able to play despite the injury.

Klinsmann said the decision on whether to wear a mask would be up to Dempsey.

The United States faces Portugal in Group G on Sunday at 6 ET.
