Sunderland sign Pantilimon from City

Costel Pantilimon has signed a four-year contract with Sunderland.

Sunderland have clinched the signing of goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon on a free transfer.

The former Manchester City player will join the Black Cats on a four-year deal from the start of July.

The Romania international was released by City after his contract expired at the Etihad Stadium. He only made seven league appearances in three years at the Etihad Stadium but played in their Capital One Cup final win over Sunderland.

Pantilimon becomes Sunderland's third summer signing, after West Brom defender Billy Jones and Wigan midfielder Jordi Gomez, who also arrived on free transfers, and replaces Keiren Westwood, who was released, as the rival to first-choice goalkeeper Vito Mannone.

He told Sunderland's official website: "It is a great privilege and honour to join a club like Sunderland. They have an amazing history and tradition and of course passionate fans.

"When I left Manchester City it was important that I chose a club with good ambition and a head coach who has the hunger and desire to take the team forward.

"After speaking with the boss, I knew this was the right place and he was the right man. I can't wait to start."

Sunderland sporting director Lee Congerton added: "Competition for places is healthy and brings out the best in players. We already have a great goalkeeper in Vito Manonne and another one now in Costel."
