Pique agrees Barcelona extension

Barcelona have announced that defender Gerard Pique has agreed a contract extension with the club which runs until the end of the 2018-19 season.

Gerard Pique is one of many Barcelona players to have come through La Masia.
Pique returned to Barcelona in 2008.

Pique, 27, would have seen his deal expire next summer, but is set to sign on at the club where he came through the famed La Masia youth system for an additional four years.

In a statement on the club's official website, Barca confirmed the agreement with the centre-back who has played 266 times for them, scoring 20 goals.

Pique joined his hometown club as a child, but left in 2004 for Manchester United, where he made his professional debut. In 2008, his final year at Old Trafford, Pique won the Premier League and Champions League with United before returning to the Camp Nou.

Since then, he has won La Liga four times, the Champions League on two more occasions, as well as both the World Cup and European Championship with Spain.

Pique's agreement comes just a day after Barca announced that Lionel Messi had signed a new contract, appointed former club captain Luis Enrique as their new head coach and confirmed the signing of German goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
