Barrier collapse delays Osasuna game

The Spanish Primera Division game between Osasuna and Real Betis was delayed for 35 minutes after a railing collapsed under pressure from supporters.

Osasuna needed to win the final game of the season at their Reyno de Navarra Stadium to have any chance of staying in La Liga and fans were understandably delighted when Oriol Riera gave them the lead in the 12th minute.

However, the celebrations turned sour when a barrier succumbed to the pressure of supporters, with several fans injured as they tumbled onto the pitch.

Several fans were attended to on the pitch by medical staff, with at least two taken away on stretchers.

Osasuna insisted they could guarantee the safety of supporters and the referee was satisfied that the game could restart.

The delay had major implications in the Primera Division relegation battle, with Almeria vs. Athletic Bilbao, Rayo Vallecano vs, Getafe and Real Vallodlid vs. Granada all taking place simultaneously.

The Spanish Football League ruled that the other matches on Sunday afternoon had to have an extended halftime break to ensure the second half kicked off at the same time in all games.

Osasuna went on to beat Betis 2-1 but were relegated, along with Real Valladolid, as other results didn't go their way.
