Borussia Dortmund defender Hummels is a reported target for Louis van Gaal, who is expected to be named United's next manager.

And Germany midfielder Toni Kroos, who was scouted by the former manager David Moyes, played for Van Gaal at Bayern Munich.

United have lost their two senior centre-backs with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic leaving the club and Schmeichel, who won five league titles and the European Cup during his eight years at Old Trafford, believes he would be an ideal addition.

"United have got [Phil] Jones, [Chris] Smalling and [Jonny] Evans but going by what the media are saying, Hummels is a target," Schmeichel told the Daily Express. "That's a good starting point to bring him in. He has good leadership skills and he is a fantastic defender.

"He's someone we've been looking at for a couple of years and he's been heavily connected with United."

Moyes had been trying to sign a central midfielder and, even though he has been sacked, Van Gaal is expected to have the same aim.

Schmeichel added: "We need to bring in a midfielder -- players like Toni Kroos who has been mentioned for a long time and he would be a great addition.

"We need players that can install or restore the confidence in the club and squad as well."

Schmeichel believes a management team of the veteran Van Gaal and his former teammate Ryan Giggs could work well for United.

He told Sky Sports News: "The combination could be very good. I think it's very important to have someone who is extremely experienced.

"He's managed at Barcelona, Bayern Munich and he's managing the Dutch national team.

"He has the right experience, and he's the right age, in his 60s. It's important to have someone who is looked at as a mature person, with conviction."
