New United boss to decide Giggs' future

Ryan Giggs has insisted it is not a disappointment that he was not considered a possible successor to David Moyes at Manchester United and said his future as a player depends on if the next manager wants him.

• Okwonga: Januzaj as Litmanen
• Payne: Out with the old

Ryan Giggs replaces Tom Lawrence for what might be his final appearance at Old Trafford.
Ryan Giggs made his 963rd United appearance against Hull.

The 40-year-old will have his fourth and final game as United's interim manager against Southampton on Sunday but, although he was put in caretaker charge, the Old Trafford board were quick to decide they wanted someone with more experience.

Louis van Gaal, who held talks with United, is the favourite to get take over at United, even though Sir Alex Ferguson gave Giggs his support. The Welshman has ambitions to be a manager in the future but has been careful to neither say he did or did not want the United job, but was never in the running.

"It is not disappointment," he said in a news conference. "I have plenty of time. This experience has definitely helped me. I have loved it. There is no major disappointment. With all the things going on in my head, whether to carry on playing or not, there are a lot of things to consider. I am not disappointed at all."

Giggs made a record 963rd appearance for United against Hull and has not decided whether to extend his 23-year playing career.

He has insisted he will think about it after the season but revealed a key factor would be: "If the new manager wants me. Do I want to put my body through another year of eating the right things, the discipline, another preseason? Do I want to go out still enjoying it and not go on a year too long? These are all the things I have to consider."
