Phil Neville hopes to stay on

Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Gary and Phil Neville will face Salford City, the non-league club they have agreed to purchase, in a friendly on Aug. 7.

"We are really looking forward to the match, it will certainly be competitive," they said in a statement. "It will good to play with each other again, it's been a long time but more importantly we will want to give Salford City a tough game."

Between them, Giggs, Scholes, Butt and the Nevilles, who are all products of United's youth system, have made 3056 appearances for the club.

Giggs is currently interim manager, with his coaching team including Scholes, Butt and Phil Neville, and they prompted speculation that David Beckham, another member of the United side that won the FA Youth Cup in 1992, would join them in the match at the AJ Bell Stadium.

They added: "We are going to ask some familiar faces to play with us and we will be sure it will be an entertaining game for the fans of Salford."

Gary Neville, who retired in 2011 and is now part of the England coaching setup, wrote on Twitter that he would need to work on his fitness ahead of the match.

Butt's playing days also ended in 2011 while Phil Neville and Scholes retired in 2013 and the 40-year-old Giggs made his 963rd appearance for United against Hull on Tuesday. He is yet to confirm if he will retire as a player this summer.

Funds from the friendly will go to Salford City, who play in the Northern Premier League First Division North.
