Chelsea defender Cahill backs tactics

FC's Gab Marcotti discusses the rumours that Eden Hazard and Oscar are on their way out of Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea defender Gary Cahill has defended manager Jose Mourinho's tactics, saying the Blues had been very close to having a successful season.

Cahill says Chelsea were very near trophies.

Lythell: Chelsea lack guile

Midfielder Eden Hazard was quoted as saying that Chelsea were "not made to play football" following the Champions League semifinal defeat against Atletico Madrid last week, while some pundits have accused the Stamford Bridge side of negativity.

But Cahill told Chelsea's official website: "I don't know why everyone thinks you should go out and attack teams left, right and centre."

He said the Blues' 0-0 draw against relegation strugglers Norwich on Sunday had been "massively disappointing," explaining: "We were playing at home and we were hoping to put on a good show and get a win. It wasn't to be, so we're disappointed -- but it's been the story of our season.

"Teams who are fighting for their lives come here, they're organised and it's difficult.

"We've been very close on all fronts -- we reached the semifinals of the Champions League and were one or two wins away from the title, so we have been close but just not quite there."

While Cahill was disappointed following a frustrating few days for Chelsea, he said he was satisfied with his own performances and those of a solid Blues backline over recent months.

"Personally, I'm really pleased," he added. "I'm improving and I'm looking to keep on improving. Defensively, as a team, you've seen how few goals we've conceded this season, so in terms of that it's gone really well."
