Controversial Italian fixture ends 19-5

An Italian Serie D end-of-season encounter on Sunday finished 19-5, with both clubs playing without a coach and one team fielding just nine youth-team players.

Sunday's Serie D encounter finished up 19-5 to Cavese.

The final day of the campaign in Italy's fifth division saw Sicilian side Licata condemned to a comprehensive defeat by Campania's Cavese 1919 after fielding just nine players.

All nine were representatives of the club's youth setup, due to an internal dispute which saw the first-team players and coach refuse to be involved in the fixture.

A beneficiary was Cavese striker Claudio De Rosa, who coming into the fixture was three goals adrift of Savoia's Francesco Scarpa at the top of the league's scoring charts. His nine goals against Licata, though, ensured he finished the season on top.

He did so, however, without any guidance from the touchlines as just hours before kick-off, Cavase director of sport Salvatore Casapulla, coach Francesco Chietti and his assistant Pasquale Centofani tendered their resignation, along with the club's physiotherapist.

The quartet's reasoning was due to "a request made in the hours leading up to kick-off by some fans to force two specific Cava players to be included in the starting XI," according to a statement on the club's Facebook page.

The statement added: "The management staff unanimously took this decision in order to avoid any further problems, particularly with regards to their own professional dignity."

Earlier this season, the president of the club, Salvatore Manna, dismissed one of Chietti's predecessors, Massimo Agovino, after he left Manna's son out of the starting XI.

"I said from the beginning that I'm not [Jose] Mourinho, but I'm not a nobody either," Agovino told Le Cronache del Salernitano. "I'm not somebody who just nods his head when ordered from above to do things. I make my own decisions based on meritocracy.

"I was called by the president who wanted me to put his son in the midfield. I said no and that if he wanted, I would resign and we could make up some personal reasons, but he refused.

"After we won the Coppa Italia game, without his son, he was blue in the face. I was humiliated despite winning the game, then he told me on the phone that I wasn't sacked because I wasn't even coach -- he had not filed the paperwork."

Manna resigned from his position just over a fortnight ago.
