Giggs weighing up his United options

Ryan Giggs has admitted his future is still up in the air as he weighs up whether to carry on playing, look to become a manager in his own right or accept a job on the Manchester United coaching staff.

• Okwonga: Van Gaal and the politics of succession
• New United boss must keep coaches

United's interim manager is out of contract at Old Trafford in the summer and is weighing up whether to extend his 23-year playing career.

The 40-year-old, who is in caretaker charge for the rest of the season, is not in consideration to replace the sacked David Moyes as United manager, with Louis van Gaal the favourite to take over.

But there is a strong preference for some continuity in the backroom staff at Old Trafford and Giggs is expected to be offered a coaching post, with questions if Van Gaal would accept him as his assistant.

Giggs said nothing is decided, telling a news conference: "I have got to decide if I want to play or not so there is no point thinking if I want to be an assistant or if I want to be a manager somewhere else.

"I have a lot to think about, whether to carry on playing and my concentration is just on now. At the end of the season, we will see what happens."

Giggs has made a record 962 appearances for United but did not even select himself as a substitute for his first game in charge, Saturday's 4-0 win over Norwich.

But he said he remains in contention to figure in the three remaining matches, adding: "I am still training and doing bits and pieces so I am still in the frame for playing the remaining games or being involved in them."

Giggs is the only player to score in all 21 previous Premier League seasons but is yet to strike in the current campaign and he said: "It would be nice but I am not too bothered about that. Priorities have changed a little bit."

While Giggs is unsure if he will be at Old Trafford next season, he has been preparing for the start of next season, even though it is complicated by the issue of whether United, who are currently seventh in the Premier League, will have to play in the Europa League qualifying stages.

He said: "This week has been planning preseason, which has been testing because we have to wait and see about the Europa League and the Q3 [third qualifying round] for that is around about the [preseason] tour time.

"Also it is a difficult time for young players, extending contracts, renewing contracts, loan players, players that need to come back, players that need their future sorting out so there has been a lot of that this week."

United are due to play in the USA in July and Giggs admits they have a balancing act if they have Europa League qualifiers at the same time as the tour.

He explained: "It is a taxing time. It will have to be a little bit of a juggling act as a lot of the World Cup players will only just be coming back then because they will be given time off.

"It will be a mixture of maybe two teams with the World Cup players, the younger lads and the lads who don't go to the World Cup so it has given me a bit of a headache."
