Bordeaux cool Zidane speculation

Bordeaux director Alain Deveseleer has played down claims that Zinedine Zidane will become the club's manager next season.

Zinedine Zidane has been touted by some as the next Real Madrid coach
Zinedine Zidane has been linked with Bordeaux.

Zidane, 41, has made no secret of his desire to start a managerial career soon, with recent speculation suggesting that he could take over from Claudio Ranieri at Monaco -- an idea backed by Michel Platini.

Current Bordeaux manager Francis Gillot is set to step down this summer, and on Wednesday, a journalist for French TV station ITele claimed on Twitter that the club were hoping Real Madrid assistant manager Zidane would replace him.

He wrote: "According to several sources, Bordeaux are considering Zinedine Zidane. The name of Stephane Paille, currently at Real, is circulated as assistant."

But Deveseleer has cooled expectations that Zidane would return to the club where he shone as a player. "What do you want me to say?" he asked reporters on Wednesday. "The president is in the United States, I was in Lille on Sunday, Paris on Monday and away yesterday too. I’m not aware of it."

Deveseleer pointed out that people first started talking about Zidane coming to Bordeaux in January, and said the club were not interested in commenting on speculation.

"There are a lot of rumours. We never denied or confirmed those about [Christian] Gourcuff, [Eric] Gerets or [Vahid] Halihodzic. We’re not going to start now," he added.

Bordeaux, who won the French Cup last season, are currently seventh in Ligue 1. As a player, Zidane helped them reach the UEFA Cup final in 1996 before leaving for Juventus.
