London, Munich compete for 2020 final

UEFA has confirmed either Wembley Stadium or the Allianz Arena will host the semifinals and final of Euro 2020.

Michel Platini is the president of UEFA.
Michel Platini said Euro 2020 will be a "historic" tournament.

A total of 19 countries are bidding to host games in the tournament, which will be played across Europe to mark the 60th anniversary of the competition.

Twelve cities will share matches to be played in the group stages, the last 16 and quarterfinals, but only one will host the semifinals and final.

London, which staged the European Championship final in 1996, and Munich, the host city for the 1988 final, are the only two cities to have submitted bids to the European governing body for the semi-finals/final package.

UEFA released a list of the 19 cities to have submitted bids to share matches earlier in the tournament, which are as follows: Baku, Minsk, Brussels, Sofia, Copenhagen, London, Skopje, Munich, Budapest, Jerusalem, Rome, Amsterdam, Dublin, Bucharest, Saint Petersburg, Glasgow, Bilbao, Stockholm and Cardiff.

UEFA president Michel Platini said on the organisation's official website: “We are extremely happy to have received so many bids to host UEFA Euro 2020. The 60th year anniversary edition of the tournament will be an historic one, with matches played in many European countries.

"By spreading the Euro across our continent, we will allow more fans from more nations to share in the excitement of hosting such a magical event. Member associations will also benefit greatly from this format, since more of them will be exposed to an elite tournament and have the opportunity to increase the development of football in their respective countries. I wish all the candidates the best of luck in this bidding process."

UEFA's Executive Committee will make its final decision on the 13 host cities on Sept. 19.
