Moyes wants Welbeck to stay

The FC crew weigh in on David Moyes' first season in charge as manager of Manchester United.

David Moyes insisted he wants to keep Danny Welbeck at Manchester United after reports emerged that the striker is considering his future elsewhere.

Danny Welbeck has had some great moments for Manchester United under David Moyes. Will there be more?

The England international was a boyhood United fan. But there are suggestions, which have not been denied by the forward’s representatives, that he may leave Old Trafford to play more as a striker and because his relationship with Moyes has apparently deteriorated.

But the United manager is adamant he regards the Mancunian, who has played 33 times in his reign, as a vital member of his squad.

"Danny Welbeck is really important to me and I really value him," he said in a news conference after Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Everton in which Welbeck came on as a substitute at 75 minutes.

Welbeck, who only scored twice in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge of United, has struck 10 times for Moyes. But he has had fewer opportunities to play in the middle since the January arrival of Juan Mata.

United suffered their 11th league defeat of the season but Moyes insists there are better times ahead as he plans a major overhaul.

"The supporters have been incredibly behind the team and supported the team throughout," said Moyes. "They realise it has been a difficult season. The supporters have supported the team. They understand it has not been good, I recognise it has not been good, it needs to be better

"Everybody knows that we are on track to make changes and do some different things. We are rebuilding, we have got things we want to do. Today [Sunday] there were things that were not that good but there were things that were good. We need to try and get rid of the bad things and do better with the things we should have done."
