Juventus edge closer to title

Juventus got one hand on a third straight Serie A crown thanks to a 1-0 win over relegation-threatened Bologna on Saturday evening.

Goalscorer Paul Pogba celebrates with Sebastian Giovinco after netting the winner against Bologna.
Goalscorer Paul Pogba celebrates with Sebastian Giovinco after netting the winner against Bologna.

Paul Pogba's 64th-minute goal was enough to take the Bianconeri one step closer to a title which could be theirs next weekend.

With four games of the season to go, Juve also still have the chance of breaking through the 100-point barrier, having moved on to 90 with this win.

Bologna, meanwhile, have a battle on their hands to stay up with Sassuolo now level on points with Davide Balladrini's men.

The game was dominated by the hosts, even if the final result failed to reflect Juve's superiority.

Roma ensured Juventus will have to wait a little longer with a 1-0 win at Fiorentina which returns them to within eight points of the league leaders with four games of the season to go.

Radja Nainggolan's goal in the 26th minute was enough for Rudi Garcia's men to keep the title race alive while securing the Giallorossi's return to the Champions League next season.

Fiorentina, who put up a brave fight at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, missed a chance to increase the pressure on Napoli in third and now look likely to have to settle for a place in the Europa League as their attention turns to the Coppa Italia final on May 3.

AC Milan kept up their push for a place in the Europa League next season with a 3-0 win over struggling Livorno, their fifth win in a row.

Mario Balotelli, Adel Taarabt and Giampaolo Pazzini scored the goals for Clarence Seedorf's men, who remain five points behind city rivals Inter Milan in the hunt for fifth place.

Milan travel to Roma next weekend before hosting Inter in a derby which could prove decisive in the hunt for European football next season, while Livorno could be relegated in their next two games with their survival hopes now hanging by a thread.

Inter Milan strengthened their hold on a European place with a 2-0 win at Parma.

Second-half goals from Rolando and Fredy Guarin decided the match, but things could have been different had the hosts not seen former Inter striker Antonio Cassano's penalty saved by Samir Handanovic and Gabriel Paletta sent off when the score was still 0-0.

The win tightened Inter's hold on fifth place as their opponents' Europa League charge faltered.

Antonio Candreva's stoppage-time equaliser stole a share of the points for 10-man Lazio in a gripping 3-3 draw against Torino.

The hosts twice took the lead through Stefano Mauri and Candreva, only to be pegged back by goals from Jasmin Kurtic and Panagiotis Tachtsidis.

The dismissal of Diego Navaretti then swung the contest in Torino's favour, and they looked to have secured the win with Ciro Immobile's strike a minute from time.

However, Candreva's second of the match five minutes into time added on secured an unlikely draw for Edy Reja's men, although Inter Milan's win leaves both teams seven points off the European places.

Napoli's hopes of catching Roma in second place effectively ended by a 1-1 draw at Udinese.

Jose Callejon gave the Azzurri the lead in the first half, but Bruno Fernandes levelled in the 55th minute for an Udinese side who showed great pride, even with little at stake for them.

Napoli's woes were compounded late on when Federico Fernandez was sent off, leaving them to finish the game with 10 men.

Hellas Verona moved back into the top half of the Serie A table with a 2-1 win at Atalanta.

Former Atalanta midfielder Massimo Donati put the visitors ahead early in the second half and Luca Toni doubled their lead in the 72nd minute.

German Denis pulled one back for the hosts three minutes from time but Hellas held on for three points. The win was the promoted club's 15th of the campaign and lifted them three points above their opponents and into 10th place with four games remaining.

Bottom-side Catania gave their faint hopes of avoiding relegation a boost by condemning Sampdoria to their third straight defeat in Sicily with a 2-1 win.

The home fans sensed it was going to be their side's day when Sebastian Leto put them ahead on the stroke of half-time.

Sampdoria's Stefano Okaka levelled shortly after the hour mark. only for Catania to go back in front two minutes later thanks to Gonzalo Bergessio's goal.

Catania held on for their fifth win of the campaign and halted a six-match losing streak in the process. The victory lifted the Sicilians five points adrift of Bologna, who occupy the last position of safety.

Sassuolo boosted their hopes of survival with a 1-0 win at Chievo in Verona.

Domenico Berardi scored the only goal of the game in the 40th minute to hand Sassuolo three precious points in their battle to avoid the drop. The win, Sassuolo's third on the road this season, has lifted them to 18th place, level on 28 points with Bologna, who hold the last safe position.

Goals from Marco Sau and Segundo Ibarbo helped Cagliari come from behind to beat Genoa 2-1 at the Luigi Ferraris Stadium to ease their relegation fears.
