Tim Howard signs extension at Everton

Tim Howard has signed a contract extension to remain with Everton until 2018.

Everton wants Tim Howard to stay around for another four years.

The U.S. national team goalkeeper added two years to his current deal with his Premier League club, which was set to expire in 2016.

With the new deal, he'll remain under contract at Goodison Park until he is 39 years old.

This season, Howard has helped Everton reach new heights, as the Toffees are challenging Arsenal for fourth place and a spot in the Champions League.

"It is fantastic news," Everton manager Roberto Martinez told the club's official website. "To have Tim Howard performing as he has been this season, I cannot see past him to choose the best goalkeeper in the league.

"For him, in such an important year with the World Cup around the corner, to commit his future for the long term is an incredible moment for the dressing room.

"I am extremely proud of Tim's achievements for the football club. On top of his goalkeeping it's his overall demeanour and personality in the dressing room. He is a strong leader."

Howard joined Everton on loan from Manchester United in 2006 before making the deal permanent the following season. He set a club record in the Premier League with 16 clean sheets in 2008-09.

He has been the first-choice goalkeeper for the United States since 2007.
