Liverpool sweating on Sturridge fitness

Liverpool have been given a boost as striker Daniel Sturridge's hamstring injury is minor and he could play a part in Sunday's match at Carrow Road

LIVERPOOL -- Daniel Sturridge is “struggling” to return to fitness for Liverpool’s trip to Norwich on Sunday, according to manager Brendan Rodgers.

Usher: Rodgers must shuffle his pack

Sturridge, 24, limped off with a hamstring injury during last Sunday’s 3-2 victory over Manchester City.

Rodgers has refused to rule out the striker altogether, pointing to the speed with which he has recovered from injuries in the past.

The former Chelsea and Manchester City player missed most of preseason after suffering ligament damage in his right ankle while playing in a friendly for England against Republic of Ireland in May of last year.

However, he was fit to start the season, hitting the winner in a 1-0 Premier League victory over Stoke on the opening day and scoring a total of six goals in his first five appearances.

Rodgers told a news conference: “He may struggle for the weekend. It’s not too serious. It’s not going to keep him out for too many weeks, but he may be a risk for the weekend.

“We’ll assess it more over the next couple of days. That’s how we’re looking at it at the moment. It’s impossible to put a time frame on it at the moment, because he might make a really good recovery over the next few days and be ready for the weekend.

“We’ll see how he goes, because he does recover very quickly. Before the first game of the season, he’d only played 45 minutes of football, yet he scored the winner.

“It’s not as serious as a hamstring injury can be.”
