Tim Cahill has handed Australia a fitness boost ahead of the World Cup after making his first appearance for New York Red Bulls following three weeks out with a hamstring injury.
Cahill, 34, came off the bench for the final 30 minutes of the Red Bulls’ 2-1 MLS win over Philadelphia Union.
The former Everton player had been sidelined since being forced to come off early during the 1-1 draw against Chivas USA on March 30.
Cahill took to the field in the 63rd minute during Wednesday’s game at the Red Bull Arena and helped his side to their first win in seven matches.
Australia coach Ange Postecoglou will be relieved to see one of his key players return to action, with the Socceroos’ first World Cup match against Chile on June 13.
Australia will also face Spain and Netherlands in Group B at this summer’s tournament in Brazil.
