Draxler expected to stay at Schalke

Schalke starlet Julian Draxler is expected to remain at Schalke next year, according to his agent.

Julian Draxler will only leave Schalke if something extraordinary happens, club chief Clemens Toennies has told Sport Bild.

Schalke rejected an offer for Draxler in the winter transfer window, but the Germany international has a 45.5 million euro release clause in his contract that can be activated this summer and clubs including Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid have been linked.

However, Toennies is convinced that the 20-year-old will remain in Gelsenkirchen for at least one more season.

“Should nothing extraordinary happen, Julian will stay,” he told Sport Bild. “I am convinced that he will be here for even longer than just that one season. We will see after that.”

Schalke have enjoyed an excellent second half of the season and currently sit third in the table, having claimed just one point fewer than champions Bayern since the Bundesliga resumed after the winter break.

Draxler’s agent, Roger Wittmann, told the same publication that there was a “spirit of optimism” around the club and that “a lot would have to happen” for the midfielder to seek a move.

“It doesn’t look like it’ll happen right now,” he said. “Why should a player leave a club when that club is currently establishing itself as a top team? Also, I think it’s great when a player sticks to the contract he signed.”
