Valencia aim to keep hold of Bernat

Valencia sporting director Francisco Rufete says he hopes reported Manchester United and AC Milan target Juan Bernat stays at Mestalla for a long time.

Representatives from United, Milan and also Napoli have been spotted regularly over recent months at Valencia games, bringing speculation that a move could be in the pipeline for the Spain U21 left-back – who it is believed may be available cheaply as he is out of contract in June 2015.

Los Che’s transfer chief told calcionapoli24.it -- in comments picked up by Marca -- that he was aware of widespread interest in Bernat, 21, but is keen for the youngster to remain at Valencia for the long term.

“We want [Bernat] to be here for a long time, he is a player who has grown up here and is very important for us,” Rufete said. “But we know that there are many teams looking at him because he is performing at a really high level.”

Valencia’s own future remains up in the air given the heavily-indebted club is currently up for sale and potential new owners (who could be from the US, China, Russia or the Middle East, depending on how the sale process concludes) may or may not end up investing heavily in new players.

Rufete admitted that it was difficult at the moment to make any long-term plans, including whether Chilean attacker Eduardo Vargas -- who is currently on loan from Napoli -- could be included in a potential deal to take Bernat to the the Serie A side in the summer.

“We cannot plan for the long term,” Rufete said. “The medium term for us is to finish well in La Liga, then we will see what happens, what the player says, and what Napoli think.

“At the moment we are not thinking about what we will do with Edu, or any other player. We want the team to end up in Europe, to be solid next year to have the team we want.”
